Nintendo Suffers Three Years in a Row

Third times the... maybe the fourth.

Nintendo has lost an astounding $456 million in their past fiscal year. This is the third consecutive year the company has seen no profit, and the product responsible is…

The Wii U! The successor to the console that appealed to the masses is having big trouble, well, appealing. The console sold only 2.72 million units in the past 12 months. To put that in perspective, the PS4 sold 4.2 million units in less than 2 months on the market, and that number has recently reached 7 million with the Xbox One sitting at five (shipped).

Nintendo states, “The Wii U hardware still has a negative impact on Nintendo’s profits, owing mainly to it’s markdown (overseas).”

Nintendo only sold 310,000 Wii U units in this last quarter. With “Mario Kart 8” releasing May 30 and the console version of “Super Smash Bros.” hitting winter of this year (summer for the 3DS), the console could possibly see a spike in sales.

The reception of the Wii U and the 3DS is night and day. In Nintendo’s past financial year, they managed to sell 12 million 3DS units, bringing the total to nearly 43 million globally.

Whether Nintendo will see a profit this next year is yet to be seen. President Iwata seems to think they will, but then again, he thought the same thing last year. One thing that is certain is that the Big N is going to continue to emphasize the Wii U’s gamepad.

Will games such as “Mario Kart 8” and “Super Smash Bros.” get you to buy the Wii U? What does Nintendo have to do to get you on board? Let us know in the comments below.

  1. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…I wish Nintendo would quit making consoles and stick with handhelds. Of course, this has nothing to do with my secret desire for a real “next-Gen” Zelda experience, lol
