Hello! (That’s how they greet people in Star Wars.) YouNerded is looking to expand its staff with more voices. As it says in our banner, we are “Reviewing Nerd Culture.” So, if you have a passion for the vast reach of nerd culture—particularly regarding TV, movies, video games and comics—then you’ve gracefully stumbled onto the right site, my friend.

Unfortunately, this is not a paid position. Instead, this will provide you with the experience of working with a team that shares similar passions. If you are looking for experience or simply need a place to get published, then have a look below at what positions are available to you—pretty much everything.

Editor at Large

Location: Anywhere

Number of open positions: 2

This position is for the idea machine. You should be versed in a vast array of genres and franchises in nerd culture. You should also be ready to work with other team members to create written, audio and video content. Finally, you should be able to transcend many of if not all of our channels we offer. With all those requirements out, this should be a fun position. You essentially have the power to create what you want, whenever you want. You are encouraged to use the aforementioned channels as your playground and collaborate with the staff to help produce quality content for our audience.

Assistant Editor

Location: Anywhere

Number of open positions: 1

This position is for the grammar freak. You should be able to identify a noun and a verb within any given sentence. This is a site centered around nerd culture, so while not a requirement, it’s a plus if you are interested in what we cover. You should be able and ready to edit anywhere from 150 words to 3,000 with an appropriate warning. Given that this position will see you mainly editing reviews and features, surprise requests should be minimal.

This position is for the news hound. You should be able to write news in a timely manner with proper formatting and style. You should also be factual in your words while also entertaining in your style. Nerdy news is fun; you should be able to match the excitement while still remaining objective to an extent. You should be able to find noteworthy stories. Additionally, you will need to edit other writers’ articles, so editing skills are a must. Along with all of the other qualities, leadership is among them as well. As a news editor, you will have writers under you whom you may need to manage.

Social Media Enthusiast

Location: Anywhere

Number of open positions: 1

This position is for the tweeter whose tweets are over 9,000! You should be versed in the big four social networks—Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat—while also on the look out for potential social playgrounds like Periscope. You should be aware of new trends and trending topics. In addition to your social addiction, engaging with our audience is key. This can range from favoriting that tweet that’s oh-so-right to responding to emails. You should be able to show readers, listeners and viewers alike that we are more than just a “Y.”

Podcast Host

Location: Milwaukee, Chicago

Number of open positions: 1

This position is for that vocal individual. You should be able to talk about what you are passionate about. You should be able to commit to a set day of the week for recording and editing. Skills in audio programs like Adobe Audition and Audacity are a plus.

Video Host

Location: Milwaukee, Chicago

Number of open positions: 2

This position is for your video personality. You should be able to speak comfortably on camera, both solo and with multiple people. Skills in video editing with software such as Adobe Premiere, Final Cut Pro and/or iMovie are a plus.

[Insert Channel] Editor

Location: Anywhere

This position is the friendly neighborhood nerd. YouNerded delves into a multitude of genres. As a Senior Editor, you should have heavy interest in your corresponding channel. Leadership skills are a requirement, as you will have writers under you to manage. In addition to writing chops, you should have some idea of how to edit someone else’s writing. For whichever channel you fancy, it is vital that you are aware of what’s happening in that area.

This position is for the caper. You should have a passion for superheroes. Superheroes are everywhere, and you should have knowledge/interest in the genre across all media: TV (Arrow, Daredevil), movies (Age of Ultron, Batman v Superman), games (Batman: Arkham Knight, Injustice: Gods Among Us) and comics (…). You can either write news, reviews, features, a mix or all.

This position is for the cartridge blower. If you have a calling deep in your core about video games, keep reading. This position is for the gamer who can appreciate the technical prowess of a game like Star Wars Battlefront, rant on the symbolism in the latest indie darling and identify the trends and issues in the industry. As a Gaming Writer, you will review, write features on and deliver news regarding the medium. If you’re up to the task, apply at will.

This position is for the one who knocks. You should be able to critically think about drama in both TV and film. Your analysis is important here, seeing as you will be responsible for reviewing and writing features on the dramatic side TV and film.

This position is for the Doctor. If you have a passion for all things sci-fi—Star Wars, aliens, Aliens, Doctor Who—this might be the role for you. You will be responsible for all things sci-fi here on YouNerded. As a Sci-Fi Writer, you will review, write features on and deliver news regarding the genre. If you’re up to the task, apply at will.
