Legendary Pictures announced today that Star Wars: The Force Awakens star, John Boyega, will be the leading man in their troubled Pacific Rim sequel.

Boyega will play the son of Stacker Pentecost, the character Idris Elba played in the original film. Guillermo Del Toro will step out of the director’s chair in favor of Daredevil Season 1 showrunner Steven DeKnight for the sequel, with Del Toro taking a producer credit instead. Boyega will reportedly also take a producer credit.

Del Toro was quick to praise the casting, saying: “I am very proud and happy to welcome John into a fantastic sandbox. The Pacific Rim universe will be reinforced with him as a leading man as it continues to be a multicultural, multi-layered world.” He went on to say that he “couldn’t think of a better man for the job.”

Pacific Rim: Maelstrom has had more than its fair share of development issues. Last we heard, the film was being “delayed indefinitely,” and rumors swirled regarding its cancellation. Obviously, those rumors turned out to be unfounded.

Is Boyega enough to get you to see ‘Pacific Rim: Maelstrom’? Will he be out of breath the whole time? Tweet us @YouNerded or leave a comment below.
