Kendrick Lamar Talks New Album

Keep your fingers crossed for a release date.

Rapper Kendrick Lamar has been on a mini promo spree, but… he’s not promoting anything set in stone.

Kendrick Lamar is what we call rare. A rapper of rare occurrence, rare skill and rare lyricism. There’s no one like him, and that’s because his only goal is to push his, not his peers’ and not the industry’s, envelope as far as he can. Besides the release of his Grammy nominated “I,” his second Saturday Night Live appearance and his unforgettable “Untitled” performance on The Colbert Report, Lamar has been under the radar since his debut two long years ago.

So when he does come around, specifically in his new Billboard cover story, he says a lot without saying much. He keeps his private life private yet answers broad questions about police brutality, his new found financial stability and what it’s like to live in what he refers to as “the last days.” All which are helping him pen his new album, which he says is almost at a complete state.

This time around Lamar says he’s focused more on the storyline versus the punchline, the writing versus the rhyming: “I pride myself on writing now rather than rapping,” he says. “My passion is bringing storylines around and constructing a full body of work, rather than just a 16-bar verse.”

This goes to show that there is definitely a greater purpose in his gift.

Imagine what it would be like to be a fly on the wall during a studio session.

Yes, The Vampires, the band behind the “Untitled” performance including member Bilal and singer Anna Wise, will be heard on the new album. They work until sun up to perfect the madness, adding a great help and instrumentation to the kind of art Kendrick wants to make.

This young brotha will stand forever.
